The Sarcophagus Factory in Santiago de Cuba was honored with the designation of "Labor Achievement" for its extended workdays and the maintenance of production.

According to the official newspaper Sierra Maestra, the team has ensured the continuity of funeral services across the nine municipalities of the province, even amid energy contingencies and hydrometeorological events.

Amid repeated complaints on social media about the shortage or poor quality of coffins, that statement sounds more like an official slogan than a true reflection of the reality faced by many families.

The entity's administrator assured that the supply of key raw materials is maintained, although she acknowledged irregularities in the availability of certain staples needed to reinforce the coffins.

The outlet highlighted that the factory has produced over a thousand sarcophagi in certain months and that, thanks to extended work hours, it has maintained distribution to various regions with support for fuel and transportation.

For these results, the National Union of Public Administration Workers awarded the Proeza Laboral flag to the group.

The recognition occurs in a national context characterized by concerns regarding the quality and availability of coffins in other provinces.

In 2025, a video circulated on social media showing a coffin allegedly made of cardboard in the Santa Ifigenia cemetery in Santiago de Cuba, which sparked criticism towards the Comunales company.

More recently, in Velasco, a municipality of Gibara in Holguín, family members reported that they had to improvise a coffin out of cardboard and adhesive tape due to the complete lack of coffins at the local funeral home.

Last December, images also circulated from Guantánamo showing a coffin with a broken glass placed in an improvised manner.

While in Santiago it is recognized as an achievement not to halt production, in other parts of the country reports of precarious conditions persist, impacting families during one of the most sensitive moments: the farewell to their loved ones.
