Professor and activist Alina Bárbara López Hernández was detained for 12 hours on February 18 in Matanzas, along with activist Leonardo Romero Negrín, while they were heading to the Parque de la Libertad in Matanzas, the site of their monthly peaceful protest.
López Hernández also intended to deliver a letter to the Municipal Assembly after the protest to request attention to the citizens' petition for an amnesty law submitted to the Cuban Parliament on February 4.
According to the essayist on her Facebook profile, both were intercepted by a police patrol before reaching the park. At the Romero station, he was taken to a cell while she remained in a different room. Later, they were formally charged with "contempt," an accusation they denied.
The academic reported that she has been subjected once again to the precautionary measure of house arrest, despite already being under that arrangement since June 18, 2024, in another case for alleged "assault," the trial for which, scheduled for January 30 in the Municipal Court of Matanzas, was suspended without official explanations.
According to her testimony, the interrogation was conducted by Lieutenant Colonel Rogelio Cuesta Aragón, an officer who previously ordered charges to be brought against her for "disobedience." This military officer, who has harassed her on several occasions, stated that she is "one step away" from being accused of "incitement to commit a crime."
The professor stated that she will continue to exercise her freedom of expression and confirmed that she will go to the Municipal Assembly to submit the documentation related to the amnesty petition, a demand that is gaining momentum in the requests of Cuban civil society both inside and outside the Island.
Member of the Academy of History on the island and resident co-director in Cuba of the Executive Committee of the Cuba Section of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA), Dr. Alina Bárbara has been arrested and assaulted several times for her civic protests.
This time, as in others, his family, friends, and dozens of internet users mobilized on social media to denounce the arbitrariness, which was also reported by various media outlets.
So far, the authorities have not provided an official statement regarding the most recent arrest, nor have they clarified whether the new charges will lead to another legal proceeding.
