A riot occurred early Thursday morning at the provincial prison of Canaletas, in Ciego de Ávila.
The Cuban opposition member José Daniel Ferrer reported the event on his Facebook.
"URGENT! Riot police, shots fired, the protest of political and common prisoners continues with cries of Homeland and Life," he said.
In the video, a prisoner can be heard saying that a young man named Daniel was found hanging after being beaten by the guards, and he questions whether it was a suicide.
According to Ferrer, the inmates are protesting due to extreme hunger, abuse, beatings, water scarcity, and poor hygiene.
"Due to the extremely serious problems they face in that prison, which is a kind of extermination camp, as are most or all prisons in Cuba."
"The situation in which political prisoners and also common prisoners survive is truly terrible and alarming. Prisoners are constantly dying from tuberculosis, malnutrition, as well as a combination of diseases and malnutrition," he detailed.
The leader of UNPACU explained that the inmates blocked the doors, and the authorities had to bring welding and metal cutting equipment to be able to open the door.
"We don't know what happened next, if they have been beaten, if they are being beaten, or if some of those who organized or participated in this protest could end up being killed," he noted.
