An international convoy with humanitarian aid is scheduled to arrive in Havana on March 21, amid one of the most severe crises Cuba has faced in decades.

The initiative, which was initially conceived as a maritime fleet, evolved into a coordinated operation “by air, sea, and land” under the name of Nuestra América Convoy To Cuba,” as confirmed by its organizers.

From a flotilla to an international convoy

According to the promoters, the original idea of a flotilla was expanded in response to the international reaction received.

“In response to the overwhelming global solidarity with Cuba, the initial idea of the Flotilla has transformed into a Convoy coordinated by air, land, and sea, which will converge in Havana on March 21,” they indicated in the document sent to AFP.

EFE specified that the convoy will deliver "food, medicines, medical supplies, and essential goods," and that the meeting point will be the Malecón in Havana, one of the most iconic places in the Cuban capital.

The initiative is organized by "an international coalition of movements, unionists, lawmakers, humanitarian organizations, and public figures."

Delegations from various countries are already working on gathering resources, purchasing essential supplies, and organizing logistics for transportation to the island.

For the moment, the countries from which the delegations will depart have not been specified, nor have the specific mechanisms for entering Cuban territory been detailed. It has not been clarified whether public figures who have expressed support will travel to the island.

Political support and international figures

Among the figures who have publicly expressed their support is the Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, who participated in 2025 in the Global Sumud Flotilla, organized to attempt to deliver aid to Gaza.

In the statement, Thunberg asserted: "The United States is currently committing a brutal act of collective punishment against the Cuban people."

He also stated: “I support this convoy to Cuba […] because international solidarity is the only force powerful enough to confront imperial figures like Trump and Netanyahu.”

U.S. Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib has also expressed her support for the initiative.

For his part, the American political activist David Adler, one of the organizers, explained that the objective is similar to that pursued with the flotilla to Gaza last year: “to challenge a blockade that was starving the civilian population.”

The promoters acknowledge that several of the organizers of the mission to Cuba previously participated in the Sumud flotilla to Palestinian territories.

Cuba is experiencing one of the deepest economic crises of recent decades, characterized by a combination of chronic shortages, high inflation, and a decline in basic services.

The lack of fuel has caused prolonged blackouts in several provinces, disruptions in public transportation, and partial shutdowns in productive sectors.

This is compounded by a shortage of food and medicine, which has forced the population to turn to the informal market, where prices are often unattainable for most state salaries.

The situation has been exacerbated by the hardening of Washington's policy under the administration of Donald Trump, which has reinforced the embargo and applied additional sanctions related to the supply of oil to the island.

After blocking shipments of Venezuelan oil and threatening measures against countries that trade hydrocarbons with Havana, the energy pressure intensified.

Meanwhile, the Cuban government has implemented emergency plans, rationing, and economic adjustments that have failed to halt the decline in purchasing power or the growing social discontent.
