The death of a two-year-old child at the Provincial Pediatric Hospital "Eliseo Noel Caamaño" in Matanzas has caused shock and outrage on social media after the child's mother reported alleged medical negligence in the care her son received.
"Rest now, my love, you will no longer suffer as you did while they let you die. Those who did this to you will suffer greatly, you will see; life will make them pay. They must suffer just as much as you did," said the woman, identified as Katheryn Meriño, in a sorrowful message posted on her social media.
The hospital center issued an official statement confirming the death that occurred on February 14, 2026, and explained that the minor had been referred from the municipality of Jovellanos with several days of fever and respiratory symptoms.
According to the institutional version, the child received diagnostic studies and treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotics, and was initially in stable condition.
Subsequently, he experienced complications that required his transfer to the Progressive Care Unit, where he underwent mechanical ventilation following neurological deterioration.
The hospital assured that, despite the "strict adherence to protocols," the patient developed generalized sepsis with irreversible multi-organ failure and died due to septic shock.
It was also reported that the results of the autopsy are awaited to determine the definitive causes.
However, the mother of the minor claims that there were irregularities in the medical care and has questioned the actions of the healthcare staff, stating that her son did not receive the appropriate assistance at the right time.
Her allegations have been shared by numerous users on social media, where messages of solidarity and calls for the case to be clarified are multiplying.
The case reignites the debate about the conditions of the healthcare system on the island, impacted by a shortage of supplies, medications, and specialized personnel, amid the profound economic crisis that the country is experiencing.
