An elderly Cuban woman has gone viral on social media after showcasing the ingenious and complex "alarm" system she uses to protect her home.
The video, posted by user Susana Nápoles (@susy.napoles1985), has garnered thousands of reactions and comments filled with laughter, applause, and reflections.
The images show how the woman secures her door with a gate that closes from the inside and strategically places several household items: cleaning poles, a metal jug, an iron bolt, and other objects that, if they were to fall, would create a loud noise capable of alerting her to any attempt at intrusion.
The scene has sparked amusing comments such as "To set that alarm, you must go to university" and "When he finishes closing up, he has to reopen because it's already morning."
Beyond the humor, many users highlighted the impeccable cleanliness of that humble home and the shine of its pots.
"She may be poor, but neat to the highest degree," wrote an internet user. Others, however, pointed out the sadness of an older woman having to resort to these homemade methods to feel safe.
And indeed, although the ingenuity in Cuba always brings smiles, it also reveals an uncomfortable reality. Cuban grandparents are very lonely and feel afraid. They are aware of the precariousness and vulnerability of their homes in the face of crime in the country.
