The congresswoman María Elvira Salazar acknowledged the pain of Cuban families and promised imminent freedom for the people.
"We completely understand that negotiating with a mother's hunger is very difficult. Knowing that you ate that night in Miami, while your children [in Cuba] are not eating. We understand this perfectly, but we also recognize that this people are living on crumbs," said the Cuban-American congresswoman in statements for Ambrosio Hernández of Univisión, alongside her colleague Carlos Giménez.
Salazar compared the pressures exerted by the Trump Administration to childbirth.
"It's like giving birth; the child is coming out through the canal, and when the child emerges, it will signify the great freedom of the people, then happiness will come for the entire population. That's where we are," he stated.
The Republican stated that she is aware of “the sacrifice of our families within Cuba. This is a difficult process, but the birth of freedom is on its way.”
"The regime is in its final stage, and the Cuban people are closer than ever to living in freedom," he added on X.
To prosecute Raúl Castro
Salazar's statements were made last Thursday following a commemorative event held in South Florida, where several Cuban-American congressmen joined family members of the victims to remember the attack that occurred on February 24, 1996, when two civilian Cessna aircraft were shot down by Cuban fighter jets while carrying out a humanitarian mission over the Florida Straits.
Legislators argue that there is enough evidence to directly accuse General Raúl Castro, then Minister of the Armed Forces, of having ordered the attack.
"We have asked the Administration, the president, and the U.S. Attorney General to review the facts and if they find - as we know they will find - the evidence, to prosecute the one who ordered the cold-blooded murder of these individuals," said Mario Díaz Balart, according to Telemundo 51.
“It is time to hold Raúl Castro accountable,” wrote Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar on X who stated that the four Americans were “deliberately killed in international airspace by the Cuban regime.”
