The Electric Union (UNE) reported that this Sunday, February 23, 2026, the country faced disruptions throughout the day due to a generation capacity deficit, a situation that has also persisted into the early hours of today, as specified in its official information note.
According to the entity, "service was disrupted yesterday due to capacity shortages over the course of 24 hours, and the disruption has continued into the early hours of today." The highest impact recorded was 1,748 MW at 7:10 PM.
The UNE also detailed that the production from the 51 new photovoltaic solar parks was 4,051 MWh, with a maximum output of 762 MW delivered "during peak hours with this generation source."
Current status of the SEN
At 06:00 hours this Monday, the availability of the National Electric System (SEN) was 1230 MW compared to a demand of 2100 MW, with 880 MW affected. By noon, an estimated impact of 950 MW is expected.
Among the main incidents reported are breakdowns in Unit 2 of the CTE Santa Cruz, Unit 2 of the CTE Felton, and Units 3, 5, and 6 of the CTE Antonio Maceo. In addition, Unit 6 of the CTE Mariel, Unit 5 of the CTE Nuevitas, and Unit 4 of the CTE Carlos Manuel de Cรฉspedes in Cienfuegos are currently under maintenance.
The company also indicated that there are limitations in thermal generation, with 373 MW out of service.
Forecast for peak hours
For the nighttime peak hours, the entry of the Mariel fuel site is expected to provide 106 MW; the entry of 5 engines at the Patana de Regla with 40 MW; the entry of the Patana de Melones with 40 MW; the entry of 3 engines from Fuel Moa with 45 MW; and the entry of unit 3 of the CTE Rentรฉ with 40 MW.
Given this scenario, a peak availability of 1500 MW is estimated, with a maximum demand of 3150 MW, resulting in a deficit of 1650 MW. The UNE noted that โif the expected conditions persist, a shortage of 1680 MW is forecasted during this period.โ
Situation in Havana
For its part, the Electric Company of Havana reported on its official profile on Facebook that on Sunday there were disruptions in the electricity service in the capital. The peak shortfall was 175 MW at 6:30 PM.
According to the organization, it was not necessary to make emergency cuts, and the service was restored afterwards.
At the end of the report, three blocks (126 MW) were affected, with a restoration forecasted for the morning.
The company also warned that if the availability conditions of the National Electric System (SEN) do not improve, blocks and circuits could be affected due to energy contingency, without a scheduled timeframe.
