The emergence of several dumpsters at the entrance of the Yumurí Valley in Matanzas has raised concerns among residents and social media users, who are reporting the degradation of one of the country's most emblematic and protected natural areas.
The alert was published by the user Leonel Rufo in the Facebook group Ciudad de Matanzas en Fotos, where he shared an urgent call to stop the accumulation of waste on the Road to Corral Nuevo, one of the busiest access points to the valley.
According to the report, the area is covered in debris, cans, and plastics, which negatively impact the appearance of the surroundings and raise concerns among residents and visitors.
Concern about environmental and tourism impact
The Yumurí Valley is one of the most iconic landscapes of Matanzas and has historically been praised by scientists and artists. The publication notes that the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt described it as the “Valley of a Thousand Greens” due to the richness of its vegetation.
In addition to its environmental value, the area is part of the tourist routes in the province. Frequent caravans of visitors travel along the designated road, seeking to enjoy the natural scenery.
The presence of waste in a protected area poses a risk to the flora, fauna, and environmental conservation, in addition to affecting the image of the location.
Call for cleaning actions
The publication urges the eradication of landfills, the organization of community cleanup days, and the reinforcement of environmental education to prevent the ongoing accumulation of waste.
So far, no official actions have been reported in response to the complaint.
The Yumurí Valley is considered one of the main natural symbols of Matanzas, and its preservation is among the environmental priorities of the province.
