The Cuban spy René González stated that the United States is going through "a terrible crisis" and expressed concern over a potential change in leadership in the country.

"The American society is undergoing a terrible crisis. I believe that while they are busy trying to turn Cuba into a failed state, they should consider whether they themselves are on the path to becoming one," González said this Monday on the government program Mesa Redonda.

His statements come amidst a deep crisis in Cuba, which seems to concern him less than the situation in other countries.

"I would like to think that they (the U.S.) could resolve their problems in another way, but for now, it is a society that worries me," González insisted during his television appearance.

The former agent, regarded by the regime as one of the "Five Heroes," stated that there is a sector in the United States that could attempt to replace the current president Donald Trump with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a scenario he described as concerning.

"There is a segment of U.S. society that might very well try to replace a Trump with a Marco Rubio, and that would be a terrible thing. We cannot be complacent in that regard," he said.

González did not provide details about which sectors he was referring to nor did he elaborate on the specific reasons for his concerns regarding that possibility.

Her words fit within the usual discourse of the Cuban government. She blames Washington for the tensions experienced in Cuba and links them to the political and economic pressures of the U.S. government against Havana.

The statements come amid significant pressure from the United States on the regime and a blockade on oil that has left Cuba in a severe fuel crisis, impacting all aspects of life for the Cuban people.

René González served his sentence in the United States after being arrested in 1998 along with other Cuban intelligence agents. Following his release and return to the island, he has remained a regular voice in official spaces, defending the government's stance towards Washington.
