Republican Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar publicly questioned the version provided by the Cuban regime regarding the armed confrontation that occurred in waters near Villa Clara, which left four people dead on a vessel registered in Florida.
In a message disseminated on the social network X, Salazar stated that the official narrative from Havana cannot be taken as true.
"If there is one thing we have learned after decades of confronting the Cuban dictatorship, it is this: the regime lies, manipulates, and rewrites reality to protect itself. Its version of events can never be taken as the truth," he stated.
The legislator also called for a thorough investigation by the U.S. government.
I expect a thorough and transparent investigation by the United States government, with immediate access to the survivors and every detail of what occurred,” she added.
Salazar emphasized that there must be clarity, accountability, and consequences, and warned that "another cover-up by Havana cannot be allowed."
The incident, reported by Cuba's Ministry of the Interior, involved a boat registered in Florida that, according to the official Cuban account, opened fire on a unit of Border Guard Troops.
The exact circumstances of the confrontation remain under review as U.S. authorities try to independently verify what happened.
