A failure at the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant, the largest in Cuba, caused the disconnection of the National Electric System (SEN) from Camagüey to Pinar del Río this Wednesday, according to the Electric Union.
"A disconnection occurred in the National Electric Power System from Camagüey to Pinar del Río. The disconnection was due to the unexpected shutdown of the Antonio Guiteras Power Plant because of a leak in the boiler at 12:41. All protocols for restoring the SEN are already activated," the note states.
Subsequently, the general director of Electricity at the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Lázaro Guerra Hernández, specified that the unexpected shutdown of the CTE Antonio Guiteras caused an interruption in electrical service from the western area of Las Tunas to Pinar del Río, while the system remains connected from the eastern part of Las Tunas to Guantánamo.
The official added that protocols for the gradual restoration of the SEN are already being implemented and that, as a result of the technical incident, the radio and television signal was also temporarily interrupted in several areas of the country.
The National Electric System has been facing a critical situation for several years, with frequent breakdowns in thermal power plants, fuel shortages, and prolonged maintenance that have resulted in daily blackouts across much of the country.
In previous episodes, this type of incidents has also caused widespread and prolonged blackouts, instability in the service, and disruptions in strategic sectors.
By this Wednesday, the situation had already become critical with a forecast of impacts in more than a third of the country. At 6:00 am, the availability of the National Electric System (SEN) was only 1,180 MW, while demand reached 2,250 MW, with 1,050 MW affected.
