The president Donald Trump announced this Thursday that Kristi Noem will leave her position as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and will be replaced by Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin, who will take office starting March 31, 2026.
The announcement was made by Trump through his social media platform Truth Social, where he explained that Noem will serve as the special envoy for “The Shield of the Americas”, a new security initiative for the western hemisphere that will be unveiled on Saturday in Doral, Florida.
Trump expressed gratitude for the work of the current secretary at the head of the DHS and particularly emphasized her management regarding border control.
“Kristi Noem has served us well and has had numerous and spectacular results, especially at the border,” wrote the leader.
Markwayne Mullin will be the new head of Homeland Security
The president confirmed that the senator from Oklahoma, Markwayne Mullin, will be the new secretary of Homeland Security.
Trump praised Mullin's political career, who served as a member of the House of Representatives for ten years and as a senator for three years, also highlighting his profile within the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement.
The president also emphasized that Mullin is the only Native American in the Senate and described him as a strong advocate for tribal communities.
According to Trump, the new head of the DHS will work to strengthen border security, combat crime related to irregular migration, and curb the entry of drugs into the United States.
"He will work tirelessly to keep our border secure and make the United States safe again," he stated.
The designation comes at a time when immigration policy and control of the southern border remain central topics on the Trump administration's agenda.
Until now, Noem has not made any statements.
