Cuban ambassador caught leaving Ecuador after diplomatic break

A photograph circulated on social media shows the Cuban ambassador to Ecuador, Basilio Antonio Gutiérrez Gallegos, allegedly leaving the country from Quito international airport along with members of the Cuban diplomatic mission.

The image was shared by activist Alicia Ruiz Raimundo, who stated that officials from the Cuban embassy were leaving Ecuador loaded with suitcases and packages following the diplomatic break between the two nations that occurred this week.

"This photo taken at the Quito airport shows how the staff from the Cuban embassy in Ecuador left. Happy and loaded with packages and suitcases," wrote Ruiz Raimundo when posting the image on social media.

According to the message, the diplomats would have left the country amid political tensions between both governments.

In her post, the activist also accused the Cuban officials of having acted in favor of the regime in Havana and against Ecuadorian democracy during their stay in the country.

The regime of Havana accused Ecuador of subordinating itself to the demands of the U.S. in a context of increasing pressure from Washington on the island to promote change.
