A medical student in Santiago de Cuba reported that university students on the island are facing a serious crisis characterized by food shortages, lack of water in households, constant blackouts, and poor internet connectivity.

The young woman decided to break the silence and publicly denounce the situation they are facing, according to a testimony sent anonymously to independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada.

According to the account, university students face the same difficulties as the rest of the Cuban population, including issues with food, access to water and the internet, and stated that studying is made difficult by constant and prolonged blackouts.

It also warned of a marked social deterioration characterized by an increase in crime, a lack of future prospects, and the mass emigration of young people seeking opportunities outside the country.

The young woman, who requested discretion in sharing her message, claims to speak on behalf of many students who feel exhausted by the crisis the country is experiencing and by the atmosphere of political pressure within educational institutions.

"We are tired of this oppression that we live day to day and that many of us do not dare to say publicly because we would be sanctioned or 'analyzed'," he expressed.

In a message marked by frustration, the student questioned when what she described as a “torture that is slowly killing the country” will come to an end.

In recent months, several Cuban students have broken their silence to denounce the crisis in the island's educational system, which affects both national and foreign students.
