The U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, praised President Donald Trump during his speech at the Shield of the Americas Summit, held this Saturday in Miami, stating that his leadership will make history for the attention he has given to Latin America.
"I believe he will go down in history as one of the most important figures in the history of the United States, and certainly of the last hundred years, for what he has achieved and for what he is currently doing with the western hemisphere," Rubio stated before the leaders gathered at the meeting.
The head of U.S. diplomacy thanked the president for making the region a priority in his foreign policy. He stated that other presidents had promised to pay more attention to the Western Hemisphere, but had not followed through.
"We have had several U.S. presidents who said that the Western Hemisphere would be a priority, but they never followed through. However, the president has made it a personal priority," he expressed.
Rubio also highlighted Trump's "action-oriented" character and thanked the leaders present for their cooperation with the United States on key issues for the region.
The Summit Shield of the Americas, held at the Trump National Doral Miami complex in Florida, brings together right-wing leaders from twelve countries in the region to discuss joint strategies in response to regional challenges such as organized crime, drug trafficking, and immigration pressure.
In that context, Rubio warned that the hemisphere is going through a delicate moment that requires greater coordination among governments.
"This is a critical moment for our hemisphere. The challenges we face — organized crime, drug trafficking, migration pressures, and the influence of hostile regimes — require cooperation among all of us,” he noted.
The Secretary of State emphasized that this is precisely the goal of the meeting: to strengthen collaboration among the countries of the continent in the face of shared threats.
"And that is exactly what this summit is about," he concluded.
