The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated this Saturday during the "Shield of the Americas" Summit that his administration "will take care of Cuba" and asserted that the regime is going through its "last moments" due to a lack of money, oil, and international support.
During his speech at the opening of the meeting based in Miami, Trump stated that the Cuban political system is facing a terminal crisis and that the situation in the country reflects the exhaustion of the model that has governed the island for decades.
"Cuba is at the end of the road, it really is at the end of the road. They have no money, they have no oil. They have a poor philosophy. They have a bad regime that has been detrimental for a long time", the leader stated before a group of nearly 15 Latin American leaders gathered at the meeting.
Cuba is in its final moments as it has been. It will have a very grand new life, but it is in its last moments as it is now, he stated.
In a relaxed tone, Trump joked with Secretary of State Marco Rubio about the possibility of the diplomat taking charge of negotiations with the Cuban government.
“Maybe he will take an hour off and then finalize an agreement about Cuba. That will be an easy one,” he commented.
The president also assured that several of the leaders present at the summit had asked him to address the Cuban issue.
Many of you have come today and say to me: ‘We hope you can take care of Cuba.’ Four of you said: ‘Could you do us a favor and take care of Cuba?’,” he recounted.
I will take care of that, alright, he agreed.
According to Trump, the island's economic crisis worsened after the loss of Venezuelan support.
He recalled that for years, Havana relied on shipments of oil and financial resources from Caracas, but now “they have no money from Venezuela, no oil, nothing at all.”
The head of the White House also stated that the Cuban government would be interested in negotiating with Washington.
They want to negotiate. And they are negotiating with Marco and me, and with some others, he stated.
Trump added that, in his opinion, an agreement with Havana could be reached relatively easily.
"I believe that an agreement with Cuba could be achieved very easily," he said, before insisting that the current political system on the island is in its final phase.
The statements were made during the “Shield of the Americas” Summit, called by Trump at the Trump National Doral in Miami, focusing on regional security, irregular migration, and the influence of actors such as China, Iran, and Cuba in the hemisphere.
The meeting was attended, among others, by the presidents Javier Milei (Argentina), Nayib Bukele (El Salvador), and Daniel Noboa (Ecuador), in addition to other leaders and officials from the region aligned with Washington's agenda.
