Cuban reggaeton artist Yomil Hidalgo sparked conversations on social media again after joking on Instagram about the possibility of running for mayor of Centro Habana if there is a political change in Cuba.
"Gentlemen, if the bayú forms, I’m going to run for mayor of Centro Habana, so they can see the kind of show I’m going to put on," the artist wrote in a story that quickly began to circulate among his followers.
However, the publication took a different turn when the page Un Martí To Durako replicated the reggaeton artist's story, leading to a wave of critical comments from users, with some accusing the artist of not clearly taking a stand against the Cuban regime.
In the reactions shared on social media, messages can be read such as: "Chiva joking about that and lacks the courage to say 'down with the dictatorship'," wrote a user.
Other comments were also harsh towards the reggaeton artist. “This snitch, dude,” said one internet user, while another added ironically: “They usually go from snitches to mayors, and so on.”
Some users even made references to figures associated with the regime's surveillance in the neighborhoods. "You are already the sector chief," commented another profile.
The criticisms also included reproaches for treating the issue as a joke. "Someone explain to this one that it's not 'bayú', it's freedom for the Cubans," wrote another user in the comments.
Despite the criticism, there were also followers who reacted humorously to the post, sharing laughing emojis or treating the comment as just a whimsical remark from the artist.
The episode reflects how even something that may seem like a joke from a popular figure on social media sparks intense debates among Cubans about the country's political situation.
