The official newspaper Escambray, from the province of Sancti Spíritus, asserted that it will remain active in digital format following the suspension of its print edition, a measure adopted by the Cuban regime due to a lack of resources to sustain the written press in the country.
The media collective acknowledged in a video published on Youtube that the temporary disappearance of the print newspaper represents a setback for those who have devoted decades to print journalism, although they stated that the editorial project remains alive through its digital platforms.
"For those of us who started working as teenagers and learned to appreciate the smell of ink on paper, this situation is very difficult," said workers from the outlet, referring to the impact of the measure.
The editorial team of Escambray also announced that they are reorganizing their content management to fully adapt to the digital environment, while they hope that the print edition can resume when material conditions allow.
The suspension of the print edition of Escambray comes after the decision by the Political Bureau of the Communist Party to drastically reduce the circulation of printed media in Cuba due to a lack of paper, fuel, and financial resources.
Starting March 2, 2026, the national newspapers Granma and Juventud Rebelde are printed only once a week, while provincial newspapers have ceased to circulate in physical format.
The authorities have attempted to offset the cuts by promoting the digital platforms of state media and promising to provide free access to their websites through mobile data within the country.
However, the disappearance of print media represents a new setback in access to information for many Cubans, especially older adults who do not use the internet or lack smartphones.
