The President of the United States, Donald Trump, issued a strong warning to Iran on Tuesday regarding the possibility of laying naval mines in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, one of the main routes for global oil trade.
In a message posted on social media, Trump demanded that any mine that may have been placed in the area be removed immediately and warned of severe military consequences otherwise.
"If Iran has placed mines in the Strait of Hormuz, and we have no reports that they have done so, we want them removed immediately. If for some reason mines were laid and are not removed right away, the military consequences for Iran will be at a level never seen before," he wrote on his Truth Social platform.
The president added that the United States is using the same technology and missile capabilities employed against drug traffickers to neutralize any vessel attempting to mine the area.
"We are using the same technology and missile capabilities deployed against drug traffickers to permanently eliminate any ship or vessel attempting to lay mines in the Strait of Hormuz. They will be dealt with swiftly and violently. Beware!" he stated.
In a second message posted hours later, Trump asserted that U.S. forces had already attacked vessels linked to these operations.
"I am pleased to inform you that in recent hours we have attacked and completely destroyed 10 inactive boats or vessels dedicated to placing mines, and there will be more," stated the president.
The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is one of the world's most strategic maritime passages, through which a significant portion of the oil exported from the Persian Gulf to international markets passes.
The alleged attack occurs after oil prices fell on Tuesday due to a possible dialogue between Trump and the Iranian regime.
