The White House stated on Tuesday that the Cuban regime "is destined to fall," referring to the deep economic and social crisis the island is experiencing.
The statement was made by presidential spokesperson Karoline Leavitt during a press conference when asked about the Trump administration's policy towards Cuba and the possibility of an economic agreement.
"The president has made it quite clear that it is his belief, based on the facts, that the Cuban regime is destined to fall. The country is obviously in a very weak economic situation, and people are asking for help," he stated.
Leavitt added that the president believes that the regime in Havana is seeking some sort of agreement with Washington, although he clarified that he did not have any concrete updates to announce on the matter.
"The president believes and knows that the Cuban regime wants an agreement," the spokesperson stated.
He also explained that the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, has been involved in discussions related to the situation on the island following direct instructions from the U.S. president.
"As you know, Secretary of State Rubio has been involved in those discussions at the direction of the president. I have no updates for you today," he concluded.
The statements come amid a severe economic crisis in Cuba, characterized by prolonged blackouts, shortages of food and fuel, as well as growing social discontent in various regions of the country.
