The announcement of the addition of new vehicles for funeral services and transportation in Matanzas provoked a wave of criticism on social media, especially due to the inclusion of electric vehicles amidst the prolonged blackouts affecting the province.
The First Secretary of the Communist Party in Matanzas, Mario Sabines Lorenzo, stated on Facebook that a combustion hearse and two electric cargo vehicles have been added to enhance services in the area.
However, several users reacted with irony and frustration, questioning how those measures will function in a province that suffers from frequent power outages.
"If there's never any electricity in Matanzas, how are those cars going to work?" wrote an internet user in the post.
Another comment pointed to broader issues affecting the population: “And what has been done about electricity, water, or food? The entire province has practically been without power since last Monday. That’s what needs to be addressed.”
Vehicles for social services
According to the Provincial Government of Matanzas, as explained on their website, the vehicles were delivered by the Ministry of Transport (Mitrans) through the Transport Development Fund and are intended for various social functions.
According to Ramón Rodríguez Zamora, director of the Provincial Transport Company, the lot includes: two electric vans for food distribution to the community; a vehicle to support Public Health activities, such as the transport of patients requiring hemodialysis; and an internal combustion panel to reinforce funeral services.
The information was presented during the weekly meeting of the provincial authorities led by Governor Marieta Caridad Poey Zamora and Vice Governor Lázaro Vicente Suárez Navarro.
During the meeting, the governor emphasized that vehicles must be operated by responsible and experienced drivers, in addition to ensuring their care and protection.
Blackouts fuel discontent
The criticism reflects the discomfort of many residents of Matanzas due to the energy crisis, with prolonged blackouts affecting daily life, water supply, and economic activity.
In that context, the introduction of electric vehicles raised concerns among citizens regarding the feasibility of using them in a province where the electricity service is increasingly unstable.
