A Cuban was arrested and reported for smuggling at the A Coruña airport in Galicia, Spain, after the Civil Guard found 198 tobacco products, 4,400 cigars, and 80 Viagra pills in his luggage, goods he attempted to bring into the country without declaring them at customs.

The discovery occurred on March 10th at the A Coruña airport of Alvedro, during a control performed by agents from the Customs and Border Detachment of the Civil Guard, as revealed by the local press.

The man -41 years old and whose identity has not been disclosed- was traveling on a flight from Madrid, which originally originated in Cuba.

According to the authorities, the agents detected the passenger as he was heading towards the so-called “green channel” after collecting his luggage, which is the exit reserved for travelers who declare that they are not carrying any goods subject to declaration.

When questioned by agents about the contents of his luggage, the Cuban assured that he was only carrying “two bundles of cigars.”

However, the suspicions of the civil guards led to a more thorough search of their belongings.

"Due to the detected signs, a physical inspection of their belongings was carried out, finding inside the suitcases a quantity of fabric that greatly exceeded the legal limits permitted for personal use," explained the Civil Guard in a statement.

During the inspection, the agents found 198 Cuban cigars from different brands, as well as 22 cartons of cigarettes totaling 4,400 units.

Alongside the tobacco, 80 tablets of sildenafil citrate at 100 milligrams were also found, a medication popularly known as Viagra.

The authorities indicated that the passenger did not have the required health or customs documentation to import these medications into Spain, which constitutes an administrative violation.

Due to these events, the Civil Guard proceeded to create the corresponding records for administrative violations of smuggling, both for the tobacco and for the pharmaceutical products transported.

The seized items are under the custody of the Customs and Special Taxes Department of A Coruña, which will continue with the processing of the case.

The operation falls within the routine fiscal protection checks conducted by authorities at Spanish airports to detect the irregular entry of regulated goods, especially tobacco, alcohol, or medications, when they exceed the allowable limits for personal use or lack the necessary documentation.

As of the publication of this note, no new details have emerged regarding the case, which is not an isolated incident: in recent years, several similar incidents involving Cuban citizens have been reported at airports in Spain.
