Republican congressman Mario Díaz-Balart stated that the United States is not negotiating immunity for members of the Cuban regime, including Raúl Castro and the current leader Miguel Díaz-Canel.
The statements were made in an interview with Telemundo 51, where the Cuban-American legislator denied reports circulating in some media about alleged agreements with Havana.
"An article that has been covered by other news outlets with anonymous sources has stated things that are simply not true," Díaz-Balart pointed out.
The congressman acknowledged that there have indeed been discussions with individuals from Raúl Castro's inner circle, but emphasized that these contacts do not constitute negotiations.
"These are not negotiations. They are the same type of conversations that the president and others had with the Maduro regime," he explained.
Díaz-Balart also compared those contacts to the previous exchanges the administration of President Donald Trump had with the government of Iran.
When asked whether these conversations could eventually lead to more decisive actions against the Cuban regime, the legislator replied that Trump always keeps all options on the table.
"President Trump always keeps all his options on the table," he stated.
The congressman also stated that he maintains constant communication with high-level officials within the U.S. administration and expressed complete confidence that the Cuban regime will not survive the current presidential term.
"I am convinced that the tyranny in Havana will not survive this term of President Trump," he stated.
Regarding possible additional measures towards Cuba, Díaz-Balart explained that the immediate priority of the White House is to address the international situation concerning Iran.
According to the lawmaker, once that issue progresses, the attention of the U.S. administration could be more intensely focused on the situation in the island.
