Candlelight vigil at the trash dump in El Cerro after several days of protests over blackouts in Havana

Residents of the El Cerro municipality in Havana set fire on Thursday to a garbage dump amidst growing unrest over power outages and unsanitary conditions in the Cuban capital.

A video posted on social media by user Milagros Castillo shows flames consuming a pile of trash on a street in the neighborhood.

"Without protests, but burning the trash that only pollutes the environment in the area," wrote the author of the post while sharing the images.

The incident occurs after several consecutive days of protests in different neighborhoods of Havana, where residents have taken to the streets to express their opposition to the prolonged power outages.

In the early hours, protests were also reported in the Lawton neighborhood of the Diez de Octubre municipality, where residents burned trash in the streets and blocked roads as a form of protest.

According to testimonials gathered from social media users, the demonstrations in the capital have been recurring for almost a week in various areas, including Vedado, Guanabacoa, Santos Suárez, Jesús María, La Lisa, and the Cerro municipality itself.

The pot-banging protests and other forms of citizen activism reflect the growing social discontent regarding the energy crisis and the deterioration of basic services on the island.
