Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum endorsed on Monday the request for money for the Cuban regime made by her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

"Yesterday, President López Obrador, who is now retired and writing books, wrote something on his social media and said: ‘I feel very hurt by what is happening to the people of Cuba,’ because the people of Cuba have been suffering from a blockade imposed by the United States and other countries for many years, which prevents products from reaching them,” said the leader of Morena at an event in the state of Nayarit.

"Recently, they imposed another blockade to prevent oil from arriving. The Cuban brothers are suffering, and it’s a brotherly, close-knit people," he added.

Sheinbaum acknowledged that after U.S. pressure, oil shipments to Cuba stopped.

"We decided that, even though it was difficult to send oil, we would continue to provide assistance," he said.

He also acknowledged the legitimacy of the opposition within certain sectors in Mexico to the Cuban regime.

"We will continue to support the people of Cuba, and anyone who wants to support can do so (...) there are those who say, 'I do not agree with the Government of Cuba.' That's fine, but that shouldn’t make the people suffer," he said

"How can one not speak about a sister nation? Do you know what that means? It speaks of the greatness of the heart and is based on the greatness of the heart of Mexicans," he concluded.

On Saturday, former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador came out of retirement to request financial assistance for the Cuban regime.

AMLO, who rarely speaks publicly after leaving the presidency, invited people to deposit money into the bank account of the civil association “Humanidad con América Latina,” set up by citizens, writers, and journalists to purchase food, medicine, oil, and gasoline, and to help the Cuban people. “Let everyone contribute what they can!”

The leftist leader stated that he is in retirement but that it "grieves him that they seek to exterminate, for their ideals of freedom and defense of sovereignty, the brotherly people of Cuba."

"To those who think this is an unrelated dispute, I remind you of what General Cárdenas said during the invasion of Playa Girón: 'It is not right to advocate our indifference to their heroic struggle, for their fate is our fate,'" he added

According to the outlet LatinUs, Humanidad con América Latina A.C. received its authorization to operate just last week: on Monday, March 9.

The association is named after the nephew of Carlos Pellicer Cámara, teacher and political mentor of López Obrador, they add.

One day later, Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel thanked "dear brother" Andrés Manuel López Obrador, following the request for money for the regime made by the former Mexican president.

“Thank you, dear brother López Obrador. On behalf of Cuba, I will never tire of expressing gratitude for the generous solidarity and support from Mexico towards the heroic resistance of the Cuban people,” Díaz-Canel said on X.
