The Cuban-American congressman Mario Díaz-Balart supported the decision of Costa Rica to expel diplomats of the Cuban regime and urged other countries in the region to take similar actions.

Through his account on the social network X, the legislator praised the "strong leadership" of Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves and described the action as a "principled decision."

Díaz-Balart stated that Costa Rica continues to be a key partner for the United States on regional security issues, including the fight against drug trafficking, international crime, and migration.

In that context, he urged other Latin American governments to follow San José's example and move forward with the expulsion of diplomats from the Cuban regime as part of greater international pressure.

"Ecuador acted. Now Costa Rica has done the same. Other countries in the region should follow this example," stated the congressman.

The statements come in response to the Costa Rican government's decision to close its embassy in Havana and reduce diplomatic relations with Cuba to a consular level, due to the deterioration of human rights on the island.

In another post on the same social network, Díaz-Balart reiterated his support for Costa Rica's decision and emphasized its role as a key ally of the United States in the region, particularly in areas such as the fight against drug trafficking, international crime, and migration management. He also insisted that other countries should follow this path in relation to the Cuban regime.

The measure has generated mixed reactions and adds to a backdrop of increasing international pressure on the Cuban regime amid the economic and social crisis the country is experiencing.
