The opposition leader José Daniel Ferrer urged President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday to act urgently regarding the critical situation of the Cuban political prisoner Roilán Álvarez Rensoler, who suffered a cardiac arrest after 50 days on a hunger strike.

Ferrer warned on Facebook that the opposition member had to be resuscitated with a defibrillator and cautioned that his life is in imminent danger.

"She pointed out, citing information provided by her family, 'She could die at any moment.'"

According to reports on social media, the activist is in extremely critical condition as a result of the prolonged hunger strike.

“She just told me that,” highlighted her sister Arianna Álvarez, while also seeking assistance from international organizations and figures such as the UN and the Supreme Pontiff, Pope Leo XIV, in addition to Trump and Rubio, in an urgent call to action.

According to previous reports from the platform Cuba Decide, Álvarez Rensoler was already hospitalized under custody in Holguín, with a condition that was rapidly deteriorating, according to his family.

The activist, a member of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (Unpacu) and promoter of Cuba Decide, began a hunger strike in protest of what he considers his arbitrary detention, which occurred on January 30 during protest actions.

Human rights organizations have warned that their lives are in extreme danger and have demanded immediate guarantees for their medical care, while denouncing the lack of transparency from the authorities regarding their condition.

The case has raised concerns among activists, who point out patterns of repression against dissenters in Cuba, including physical deterioration while in state custody and restrictions on information to their families.

The gravity of the situation also rekindles fear due to previous instances of political prisoners dying while on hunger strikes on the island.
