The Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation (VOC, for its acronym in English) awarded the Truman-Reagan Freedom Medal to Cuban-American businessman Máximo Álvarez, in recognition of his dedication to the defense of liberty and his opposition to communism.

The ceremony took place on March 17th at the iconic Freedom Tower in Miami, a site of significant symbolic value for the Cuban exile community, as it served as a refuge for thousands of refugees fleeing Fidel Castro's regime between 1962 and 1974, the organization reported in a statement.

Álvarez, who arrived in the United States as part of Operation Pedro Pan — a program that allowed the departure of more than 14,000 unaccompanied Cuban minors — has been recognized for his story of resilience and his commitment to the cause of freedom.

During the event, the president of the foundation, Elizabeth Edwards Spalding, emphasized that the businessman embodies the example of the immigrant who thrives and contributes to American society, while remaining committed to democratic values.

"Máximo has contributed to civil society through his business leadership, philanthropy, and participation in public life. His story demonstrates that freedom must be defended and passed on to each generation," he noted.

For his part, Álvarez expressed his gratitude for the recognition and reaffirmed his identity and commitment to Cuba and the United States.

"I am Cuban, I love Cuba, and I want to see it free. But I also love the United States, because I am American," he stated during his speech.

The event featured the participation of political and academic figures, including the former ambassador to the OAS, Carlos Trujillo, and the president of Miami Dade College, Madeline Pumariega, who highlighted the honoree's impact on the community and his role as a role model for new generations.

The Truman-Reagan Freedom Medal is one of the most prestigious awards given by the foundation and honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the fight against communism and the promotion of human rights around the world.
