The Spanish political scientist Arantxa Tirado sparked controversy again by publicly criticizing what she perceives as a "deafening silence" from President Pedro Sánchez regarding what she described as "the intensification of the United States' offensive against Cuba."
Tirado, known for her favorable positions towards the Cuban regime and for questioning categorization of the island as a dictatorship, used her social media to highlight the apparent contradiction of the Spanish Prime Minister.
“President Pedro Sánchez's denunciations of the illegal war by the U.S. and Israel in Iran, or his declarative defense of Gaza, contrast with his deafening silence regarding the intensification of the U.S. offensive against Cuba,” wrote Tirado.
The political scientist emphasized that Spain, as a country that had Cuba as its last colony in Latin America and the Caribbean, should maintain a more active commitment to the island, considering the close historical and cultural ties that, in her opinion, "transcend ideological differences."
Tirado's comment is part of a series of public statements from the Spanish individual in which she has defended the official Cuban narrative and criticized what she describes as Washington's interference in the island's internal affairs.
On social media, users have recalled previous instances where the political scientist has downplayed or directly denied allegations concerning repression and lack of freedoms in Cuba.
In mid-February, the Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, visited Madrid to meet with the Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares. The meeting focused on the economic, humanitarian, and diplomatic crisis facing the island, as well as the preparation for the upcoming Ibero-American Summit in the Spanish capital.
During the visit –highlighted as part of Havana's efforts to gather support against U.S. pressure– no official statements were made by the Spanish government directly denouncing the “intensification of the offensive” from the U.S. against Cuba, other than humanitarian issues and a commitment to assistance through multilateral organizations.
