U.S. Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar denounced the imprisonment in Cuba of Jonathan Muir Burgos, a 16-year-old adolescent arrested after participating in protests in the municipality of Morón, in Ciego de Ávila.
According to Salazar's statement on social media X, the minor was detained for "raising his voice" and described the incident as a demonstration of the "brutality" of the Cuban regime, while calling for his immediate release.
Jonathan Muir Burgos has been in detention since March 16 at the Technical Investigation Department (DTI), after attending a police summons with his father, the evangelical pastor Elier Muir Ávila.
Although the father was released hours later, the minor was transferred and remains in custody.
According to reports from activists and opposition members, the authorities are threatening to prosecute him "with the full weight of the law" for his alleged involvement in the protests that took place on March 13 and 14 in that locality.
The case raises additional concerns due to the teenager's medical condition, as he suffers from a skin disease that requires constant treatment and has previously put his life at risk.
Organizations like Christian Solidarity Worldwide have condemned the detention, stating that the imprisonment of a minor for exercising their freedom of expression is unacceptable, especially amid the crisis the country is facing.
The arrest occurs in the context of new protests in various regions of Cuba, amid power outages, shortages of food and medicine, and growing social discontent.
