The Cuban-American congresswoman María Elvira Salazar asserted that "the invincibility of the Cuban regime is crumbling" after the protests held this Friday in the municipality of Morón, in the province of Ciego de Ávila.
“For decades, the invincibility of the Cuban regime has been embedded in the minds of all Cubans. It was an unbreakable belief that kept them as hostages of the Castros. But now it is crumbling,” Salazar expressed on her X profile while reacting to the videos circulated on social media.
The images released on Friday showed dozens of people marching through several streets of Morón at night while shouting "Freedom!" and banging pots and metal objects in protest against power outages, food shortages, and the economic crisis.
In one of the recordings, a person is heard calling for more neighbors to join the demonstration.
"Come on, my people, share this livestream! Morón and Ciego de Ávila are out in the streets demanding freedom," he says during the broadcast.
According to the video testimony itself, the protest moved through various areas of the city until it reached the vicinity of a police unit.
During the march, demands regarding the situation faced by the population can also be heard.
“The people are tired of going hungry, of struggling, of being in need, without electricity... It's over!” asserts a person as they continue walking.
The protesters also called for the participation of other neighbors. “And you from Morón, if you are watching me, join us!” can be heard in the video, alongside the slogan “Patria y Vida,” which has become a symbol of protest since the demonstrations on July 11, 2021.
The images show a night march where many participants use their mobile phone flashlights and motorcycle lights to illuminate the route.
The discomfort reflected in the videos occurs amidst the deep economic and energy crisis the country is experiencing. In several provinces, power outages exceed 20 hours a day, while food shortages and inflation continue.
The protests in Morón join other reports of social discontent recorded in various locations across the island in recent days, where citizens have taken to the streets to demand an end to power outages and improvements in their living conditions.
