Agents from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Newark arrested the undocumented Cuban citizen Álvaro Tuero, who had been convicted of sexual abuse of minors, after he was released from a prison in New Jersey at the beginning of the month.

The official announcement of his arrest was published this weekend on the ICE account on the social network X, where the agency described him as a "repeat offender," convicted of sexual offenses against minors.

Records indicate that Tuero's arrest took place on March 6, after being released from a state prison in Bridgeton, according to a report by Daily Voice.

Federal immigration authorities reported that Tuero, a resident of Union City, has a criminal record that includes sexual assault of a minor under 13 years old, indecent acts, endangering a minor through sexual conduct, burglary, and multiple parole violations, among other offenses.

According to records from the New Jersey Department of Corrections, Tuero was last sentenced on October 25, 2024, in Hudson County, where a court imposed a three-year prison sentence for endangering the welfare of a child through sexual acts—an offense committed on February 17, 2023—along with a maximum additional sentence of 365 days for violating a condition of a special sentence related to that offense.

The extensive criminal record of the immigrant from Cuba dates back to at least 1999, when he was convicted of indecent acts in the presence of two girls, according to the New Jersey Sex Offender Registry, as cited by media outlets.

In 2018, he was arrested for violating the terms of his probation under the Megan's Law of New Jersey, which requires convicted sex offenders to register with local law enforcement, report changes of address within 48 hours, and undergo annual verification. Failing to comply with this law is classified as a fourth-degree crime, punishable by up to 18 months in prison.

Tuero remains in federal custody pending immigration procedures for his deportation.

His case falls within the intensification of ICE operations under the second administration of President Donald Trump, which prioritizes the detention and deportation of undocumented immigrants with criminal records, particularly for violent and sexual offenses. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has reiterated that about 70% of those arrested are convicted criminals or face criminal charges.

ICE arrested two Cubans with a history of sexual offenses in Michigan and Florida, as part of a series of operations that have intensified throughout March across the country. Officials from the federal agency also arrested a Cuban citizen in Boston with a criminal record and a final order of deportation.

The immigration authorities recently announced the arrest in Florida and the deportation of two Cubans with extensive criminal records.
