A 41-year-old Cuban identified as Miguel Hernández was arrested in Broward County, in South Florida, accused of his alleged involvement in the shooting death of his girlfriend, which occurred in the city of Oakland Park.
The case, which has generated conflicting statements between the authorities and the family of the accused, includes charges of involuntary manslaughter with a firearm and drug possession.
Hernández was arrested this Sunday and remains in custody without the right to bail, according to prison records.
The investigation points to an incident that occurred on January 24 in a residence located in the 4000 block of Northeast 8th Avenue, where the couple lived.
According to the report from the Broward Sheriff's Office, the agents responded to an emergency call about a shooting and, upon arrival, found the woman with a gunshot wound to the head.
The victim lay on the floor, near the entrance of a studio apartment, surrounded by blood, although she still showed vital signs.
A few meters away was Hernández, visibly shaken, with blood on his hands, and screaming desperately, “Help her, help her!”, according to the police report.
The woman was transferred to a hospital in critical condition, where she later passed away.
The authorities conducted a search of the home shared by the couple, where they found a firearm placed on clothing inside a laundry basket located near the entrance.
Additionally, they found a glass pipe in Hernández's possession and two others next to a small bag inside the apartment, objects commonly associated with drug use.
The official version claims that Hernández was accused of causing his girlfriend's death “and having collaborated in her suicide; specifically, by providing her with a loaded firearm and inciting her to take her own life”, according to court documents cited by local media.
However, the mother of the accused categorically rejects that hypothesis.
The woman, who claims to have been present at the moment of the shooting, maintains that it was a suicide.
“My son was not involved in her shooting. She shot herself. She committed suicide,” he stated in comments to Telemundo 51.
The mother recounted that she heard a single gunshot that day and, at first, she feared that her son might have been the victim.
"I thought maybe she had killed him, that she had shot him," she added.
He also stated that the couple had been living together for between two and three years and that he never witnessed any episodes of violence between them.
“My son has nothing to do with that,” he insisted.
The case was presented before a judge following the arrest, who ordered that Hernández remain in custody without bail, considering the severity and specifics of the situation.
"It is a singular and highly unfortunate set of events. This is not a routine case; it involves a series of very unusual and unfortunate circumstances," he expressed during the hearing.
At the moment, the authorities have not fully clarified the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
The investigation remains open as Hernández stays in the main jail of Broward County awaiting the progress of the judicial process.
