Kuwait confirmed on Friday that an Iranian drone attack damaged a power and water desalination plant, in an escalation that directly threatens the country's water supply, as approximately 90% of Kuwait's drinking water comes from such facilities.
The Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy of Kuwait reported material damage to some components of the facility and immediately deployed emergency equipment and technicians to secure the site and maintain operational efficiency, in coordination with security authorities.
The attack on the desalination plant occurred on the same day that Iranian drones struck the Mina al-Ahmadi refinery again, causing fires that were brought under control with no injuries reported.
It is not the first time that that refinery has been targeted by Iran: on March 19, it suffered its first drone strike that caused a small fire with no casualties, and the following day it was attacked a second time with drones that ignited fires in some of its units.
The attack this Friday represents a qualitative escalation as it extends to the country's water infrastructure, deemed of primary strategic importance due to Kuwait's almost total reliance on desalination for its potable water supply.
Kuwaiti air defenses responded to threats from Iranian missiles and drones, with explosions attributed to interceptions reported from the early hours of the morning. Analysts warn that the conflict could drive the price of Brent crude from 67 to over 110 dollars if the situation continues to escalate.
These attacks are part of the conflict that began on February 28, 2026, when the United States and Israel launched Operation Epic Fury against Iranian nuclear and military facilities, resulting in the death of the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. It is important to remember that Trump had set April 6 as the deadline to reach a diplomatic agreement before escalating military actions.
Iran responded with the True Promise Operation 4, launching over 500 missiles against targets in Israel and U.S. bases in the region, in a response that marks a new phase of the confrontation.
