The President of the United States, Donald Trump, assured this Wednesday that Iran has requested a ceasefire amid the conflict in the Middle East, and indicated that Washington will consider that possibility only if the Strait of Hormuz is reopened.

In a message shared on his social network, the president stated that the “president of the new Iranian regime” has requested a cessation of hostilities. “We will consider it when the Strait of Hormuz is open, free, and clear,” he noted.

Trump warned, however, that until that condition is met, the United States will continue its military offensive against Iran, in a context of escalating warfare in the region.

The identity of the Iranian interlocutor referenced by the U.S. president is unclear. Following the death of the supreme leader Ali Khamenei in recent bombings, power in Tehran is going through a transition phase, with several figures vying for leadership.

The announcement comes at a time of heightened tension, with cross-attacks between Iran, the United States, and Israel at various points in the Middle East, and with the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz at the center of the crisis.

Trump is scheduled to address the nation this Wednesday evening to provide an "important update" on the situation in Iran.
