The U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, published this Friday a message on the occasion of Good Friday in which he invoked the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and its significance for Christian believers around the world.

On his official account on X, Rubio wrote: Jeanette and I join our Christian brothers and sisters to reflect on the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, which opened the way for us to live with Him in Eternity.

The personal statement from the secretary accompanied an institutional message from the Department of State that Rubio referenced in his post.

The official communication from the institution stated: "On this Good Friday, the United States joins Christians around the world to reflect on the sacrifice of Christ, the power of redemption, and the hope of the Resurrection."

The message from the State Department included an image of three crosses on a hill against an orange sky, with the text "Good Friday" and the official logo of the institution.

The mention of Jeanette, the secretary's wife since 1998, gave the statement a personal and familial tone that goes beyond mere protocol to become a declaration of shared faith.

The message fits a consistent pattern of Rubio as a public figure who openly incorporates his Christian faith into his institutional role.

In March 2025, the secretary sparked debate by appearing on television with the ash cross of Ash Wednesday on his forehead, at which time he explained that the symbol represents "a day of reflection and humility."

In May 2025, Rubio was received by Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican along with Vice President JD Vance, during a visit that strengthened the ties between the U.S. administration and the Holy See.

In January 2026, while commemorating the anniversary of the 11J in Cuba, Rubio concluded his message by revealing that he prays every day for Cuba to be free, sovereign, and independent, with its destiny in the hands of its people.

In February 2026, during the Munich Security Conference, the secretary defended the Christian roots of Western civilization as one of the deepest ties between the United States and Europe, describing both regions as "one civilization" united by Christian faith, culture, and shared heritage.

This type of statement reflects the approach of the Trump-Rubio administration to openly reclaim Christian identity in diplomacy and government communication, positioning the United States as a nation that joins in the global commemoration of one of the most sacred dates in the Christian calendar, two days before Easter Sunday.
