David Montes de Oca, artistically known as El Dandy, former lead singer of Charanga Habanera, recalled in a statement to Telemundo how drugs led him to lose everything in Miami, ultimately living for three months in a car.

The Cuban musician, who joined the group led by David Calzado around 2016 after spending six years working with artist Haila María Mompié, emigrated to the United States in 2018 and settled in Miami, where he began his decline.

First, he consumed cocaine, but over time he replaced it with crack. To fund his addiction, he worked carrying groceries in a Walmart supermarket, and the little money he earned was entirely spent on buying drugs.

"I didn't care about anything, I lived just to live and felt like a slave. I didn't even eat properly. I tried to stay alert and avoid seeing anyone I knew." The turning point came when I hit rock bottom, and it was then that I decided to ask for help.

On July 12, 2025, he publicly called for help, and days later he entered a rehabilitation center to begin his recovery process.

During his treatment, Conducta Dade organized a visit to the place where he had lived, a moment filled with symbolism that was part of his healing process.

Months after starting his treatment, El Dandy showed remarkable physical and emotional recovery, giving hope to those who followed his story from the beginning.

As of today, her life is different; her face no longer shows the unmistakable signs of addiction, and the extreme thinness is in the past. However, she admits that when she returns to the place where she lived in that car, memories of a period she is determined not to revisit overwhelm her.
