"My soul aches": The heartbreaking account of a Cuban mother in front of children asking for food

A Cuban mother broke her silence on social media after experiencing a scene that, in her own words, "shattered her soul." Sitting at the door of her home, she was approached by two children, just seven or eight years old, who made a desperate plea: "Do you have an old bread, do you have a banana? Anything you can give me, we haven't eaten anything."

The testimony, shared in a video by the Facebook user Yawocita Savón, reflects an increasingly visible reality in Cuba: minors begging for food on the streets. The woman, visibly affected, admitted that she usually does not make these kinds of public complaints, but the situation overwhelmed her. “Today it’s them, tomorrow it could be any of our children,” she warned.

In his account, he questions the lack of responses to a crisis that directly affects the most vulnerable. "Children who should be thinking about studying and playing are out on the street asking for food," he lamented. He also denounced scenes that, he asserts, occur frequently: elderly people without food, individuals crying from thirst, and families unable to meet basic needs.

The woman directly appealed to the collective conscience and the responsibility of the authorities. “Where is the president of this country? Where are those people who are supposed to be concerned about the children?” she asked in the video, visibly outraged.

His message not only denounces but also pleads for solidarity. "Please, help those children," he urged, insisting that the crisis does not discriminate and can affect any family.

Savón's testimony is not an isolated incident. Just days before, a Cuban grandmother had stated in another video that they only eat "rice for the elderly and children", highlighting the structural crisis on the island.

The food crisis in Cuba has reached levels in 2026 that 80% of the population believes are worse than those of the Special Period of the 1990s, according to data from the Food Monitor Program for March of this year.

UNICEF reported in November 2025 that one in every ten Cuban children suffers from severe food poverty, eating only two of the eight essential food groups needed for their development.
