The parish of the Sanctuary of El Cobre, in Santiago de Cuba, maintains a support network that systematically assists more than 500 individuals in vulnerable situations, amidst the profound economic crisis facing the island.

According to the website Misioneros Digitales, the program is coordinated through Cáritas and encompasses at least 14 social projects aimed at sectors such as the elderly, chronically ill, people with disabilities, and families in precarious conditions.

Assistance includes companionship, provision of basic resources, and support for individuals facing abandonment, illnesses, or physical limitations, in a context characterized by shortages of food, medicine, and essential services.

The assistance system operates in an organized manner, with dozens of volunteers identifying cases, distributing resources, and following up with beneficiaries in response to the increasing demand in the community.

Among the groups served are also children with special needs, bedridden individuals, and families affected by migration or the incarceration of their members, reflecting the social deterioration in the country.

The work is sustained by donations and community management, in a situation where material shortages continue to grow, forcing local initiatives to meet basic needs that the State fails to cover.

In the midst of the crisis, these types of programs have become a key support for hundreds of Cubans facing daily challenges, especially in remote areas away from the main urban centers.
