The restoration of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre is progressing gradually following the damage caused by Hurricane Melissa, amid the material limitations the country is facing.
The update was published this Tuesday on the official Facebook page of the Archdiocese of Santiago de Cuba, where the progress in the recovery efforts of the emblematic temple located in the town of El Cobre was detailed.
According to the information released, efforts are underway to restore and replace the affected carpentry, a process that depends on the availability of wood and the time required for it to dry.
These tasks are managed by a company from Holguín.
Additionally, the roof intervention on the second floor of the Sanctuary is progressing with the participation of young people from the Santiago de Cuba Workshop School, who are replacing the damaged structures through plaster work.
The rector of the Sanctuary, Father Rogelio Deán Puerta, acknowledged that the work is not progressing at the desired pace due to the current conditions in the country, although he highlighted the efforts of the coordination team and the support received from worshippers from other countries.
The damage caused by the hurricane forced intervention in structural areas of the building, regarded as one of the main religious and heritage symbols of Cuba.
As the work continues, the Church insists that there is still much to restore in this sanctuary, which is deeply connected to the devotion of the Cuban people.
Recently, it was reported that the angel damaged by Hurricane Melissa in the sanctuary of El Cobre, Santiago de Cuba, has been fully restored.
"The restoration works of the severely damaged Angel have been completed, a project undertaken by the Office of the Historian of the City of Havana," reported the Archdiocese of Santiago de Cuba on Facebook.
"Our gratitude goes to José Duverger Aliaga, a prominent Cuban sculptor, graduate of the San Alejandro School of Fine Arts and resident of Havana," adds the information.
