Annie Ramos, 22 years old, wife of Sergeant First Class Matthew Blank, was detained by federal immigration agents inside the military base at Fort Polk, Louisiana, just days after getting married, and remains in an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in Basile, at risk of being deported to Honduras.

Blank, 23 years old, took his wife to the base last Thursday to start the process of receiving military benefits and to move forward toward obtaining permanent residency. The couple got married in March in Houston, Texas, and what was supposed to be the beginning of their life together at the base turned into a detention.

"I never imagined that trying to do the right thing would lead to them taking her away," reported the agency AP.

The case has raised concern within the military community, where organizations that support soldiers' families warn that situations like this can impact the morale of the troops and their loved ones. They point out that many service members rely on the stability of their families to perform their duties, especially in contexts of international tension or deployments abroad.

Immigration experts have also questioned the actions of the authorities, arguing that there has traditionally been a degree of flexibility in cases involving direct relatives of active military members. According to these specialists, a tightening of policies in this area could send a negative message to those considering enlisting in the armed forces.

Meanwhile, Sergeant Blank continues to seek legal alternatives to prevent the deportation of his wife, in a process that could extend for weeks or months. The outcome of the case could set a precedent for how immigration policies are handled concerning the families of active-duty military personnel in the United States.
