Farmers from the municipality of Majibacoa in Las Tunas received electric motorcycles and irrigation systems as part of a project aimed at strengthening agricultural production in an area characterized by long periods of drought.
According to a report from the local television Visión Tunera, the delivery is part of the Women's and Youth Empowerment Project for Economic and Productive Dynamization, driven by the Center for Exchange and Reference of Community Initiatives (CIERIC) with support from the German organization Bread for the World.
The resources were distributed across farms in the region, including that of the Velázquez brothers, where producers highlighted the immediate impact of irrigation systems in increasing food production.
According to collected testimonies, these technologies allow for better use of the land throughout the year, in a context where water scarcity significantly limits crops.
Benefited farmers noted that the use of irrigation can triple agricultural yields, optimize water consumption, and reduce environmental impact. They also emphasized the importance of electric motorcycles as an alternative in light of the fuel scarcity in the country.
The project also includes support for the nutrition of pregnant women, the development of a mini industry, and the establishment of sales points for agricultural products, amidst the economic challenges facing the sector in Cuba.
Bread for the World is a humanitarian organization of the German Evangelical Church that finances development initiatives in over 90 countries, focusing on combating poverty, hunger, and social inequality.
