President Donald Trump published a message this Monday on his platform Truth Social in which he categorically rejected the idea that Israel ever convinced him to go to war with Iran, attributing his decision to the outcomes of the attack on October 7, 2023 and to his long-standing belief that that country should not possess nuclear weapons.

"Israel never convinced me to go to war with Iran. The results of October 7, combined with my lifelong belief that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon, changed that. The results in Iran will be incredible,” Trump wrote in his post.

The message arrives at a time of high diplomatic tension, with the ceasefire in effect since April 8 expiring and the parties still not having reached a definitive agreement regarding Iran's nuclear program.

Parallely, a second round of negotiations between Washington and Tehran is being prepared, amidst a scenario where the ceasefire is about to expire and the second round of talks sets the tone for the situation.

Trump's stance has been consistent since the onset of the conflict: the goal is not regime change, but to destroy that Iranian nuclear arsenal, as his administration has reiterated on various occasions.

On another regional front, Washington has also made it clear that Israel will not continue bombing Lebanon, signaling that the White House is looking to contain military escalation on multiple fronts simultaneously.
