The Cuban Yam Brandy Perera Núñez, a fugitive from federal justice who was captured last Thursday in Hialeah, Florida, after having staged two consecutive escapes from authorities, faces a new criminal charge, according to court records.

Perera Núñez, 41 years old and with a criminal record since 2003, is accused of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, in addition to previous charges of fleeing and evasion, aggravated assault, serious injury, violent resistance, and grand theft, accumulated during the two days of chases that kept multiple agencies in South Florida on high alert, according to a report from NBC Miami.

The Cuban citizen had been deported to Cuba in September 2025 and re-entered the United States illegally, a crime for which a federal court document identified him as a wanted fugitive, revealed news reports.

The sequence of events began on Wednesday when Perera Núñez refused to stop and fled from Florida Highway Patrol agents, while driving a white Dodge truck with a trailer on Okeechobee Road.

The pursuit ended when the suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot in the area of Northwest 137th Avenue and Northwest 178th Street, in the northwest of Miami-Dade County, despite the deployment of a helicopter, ground blockades, and a K9 unit.

The stolen truck and trailer were linked to a network of heavy equipment thefts operating in multiple counties in Florida, including DeSoto, Highlands, and Hendry.

The next day, the K-9 unit of the Hialeah Police played a crucial role in locating the fugitive in the parking lot of the Walgreens pharmacy located near West 68th Street and 12th Avenue.

Perera Núñez tried to resist arrest, but was subdued with a Taser and restrained by more than 20 officers.

Images from the operation captured by a witness showed the moment the suspect fell to the ground as at least half a dozen agents rushed towards him. A Corvette was towed from the scene.

Perera Núñez's criminal record dates back to 2003 and includes grand theft, resisting arrest, burglary, and drug trafficking. On one occasion, he was apprehended by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

In June 2025, agents from the DeSoto County Sheriff's Office arrested him for the theft of a forklift valued at nearly $100,000, categorizing him as a convicted felon.

He was also arrested in Tampa in 2025, before being deported in September of that year.

The police chase in Miami-Dade resulted in road closures that affected local residents for hours and involved officers from the FHP, the Hialeah Police Department, and the Department of Homeland Security. At least 10 patrol cars pursued the fugitive at high speed.

Perera Núñez appeared before the court this Saturday with visible bruises on his face and an arm in a sling due to injuries sustained during the arrest.

The judge set a bail of $40,000, but that does not mean he can be released, as he was wanted as a federal fugitive and has other pending cases.
