José Daniel Ferrer García, historic leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), declared in a message published on Facebook that «Trump and Marco Rubio are today the main hope of our oppressed people».
In direct response to the third assassination attempt against the American president, Ferrer began his text, titled "Save Cuba", by thanking God for having protected Trump from the attack carried out by Cole Thomas Allen, which took place last Saturday during the Annual White House Correspondents' Dinner.
God protects His own, wrote the Cuban opposition leader, interpreting the survival of the ruler as a divine sign.
In the message, Ferrer drew a biblical parallel between the situation of the Cuban people and the enslavement of the Hebrew people in Egypt, describing the regime as "extremely inhumane" and asserting that Cuban political prisoners "survive under conditions very similar to those of the extermination camps in Nazi Germany."
The political prisoner, exiled from Cuba and arrived in Miami in October 2025, called for unity and discipline as essential conditions to achieve freedom, but he warned that the responsibility does not rest solely on external allies.
"Today we have a great ally in the government of the United States, and we must not squander the opportunity that God has given us. We should be grateful to our best friends, but we cannot expect them to do everything for us," he wrote.
Ferrer identified internal obstacles as a danger as serious as the regime's repression: "The greatest obstacle to freedom is not always just the criminal oppressor... it can also be the lack of faith, lack of unity, apathy, the mentality of every man for himself, uncontrolled egos."
The message represents a return to full confidence in the Trump-Rubio duo. In February, in response to signs of potential weakening of the sanctions, Ferrer called for not placing all hopes in the United States and for Cubans to fight "with renewed strength."
In January, I suggested that Trump could force a transition in Cuba similar to the one implemented in Venezuela. In February, I maintained that a coup by the United States should remove Miguel Díaz-Canel and Alejandro Castro Espín from power.
Ferrer concluded his publication with a call for collective action: "We trust in God, we are a brave people and we have friends like Marco Rubio and Donald Trump. We are ready to conquer the Promised Freedom."
