The collapse of a staircase in a multi-family building in the Mulgoba neighborhood, Boyeros municipality, Havana, left a woman injured and hospitalized.

The collapse was reported this Monday, but it allegedly occurred on Sunday, before the rains, according to reports from neighbors and witnesses shared on social media.

According to testimonies, the woman was descending the stairs when the structure collapsed. She suffered several impacts and was left hanging from the railing. She was taken to a hospital and is reported to be out of danger, although she remains hospitalized.

The incident highlighted the severe structural deterioration of the building, which has six floors and is located very close to El Laguito de Mulgoba.

According to what is observed in the first social media post made by the Cuban content creator Danay (@danay070), two entire sections of the staircase collapsed.

The reinforced concrete steps have collapsed, with exposed and bent steel rebar. The rusted metal railings are also visible.

Firefighters and police arrived at the scene. They used ladders to facilitate access and the evacuation of residents who remained trapped on the upper floors.

An ambulance and emergency personnel were also present, while between 30 and 50 neighbors gathered in the street to observe the situation.

Residents of the building are expected to be relocated to shelters while authorities assess the condition of the property.

Neighbors from the neighborhood stated that the deterioration of the staircase had already been reported to the authorities due to the risk of collapse, with no measures being taken.

Danay, in the video showing the incident, pointed out the impossibility of replacing the ladder immediately: "There isn't enough material for a metal one, and even less for a concrete one; I think they suggested a small wooden ladder so they can go up and down as needed."

Some neighbors expressed their distress on social media. "My God, my neighborhood is being destroyed every day," wrote a young woman from the area.

Other staircase collapses in Havana buildings

In August 2024, 13 people were rescued after the collapse of a staircase at 256 Villegas, in Old Havana.

That same year, in May 2024, a six-year-old boy was injured when a staircase collapsed in a building near the Malecón.

In November 2025, two people died in the collapse of a building in Old Havana, including a mother and her son.

The housing crisis in Cuba is worsening, but the State prefers to invest in hotels. In Havana, around 1,000 buildings collapse each year, the national housing deficit exceeds 800,000 units, and 35% of the real estate inventory is in fair or poor condition.

In April 2026, the regime itself publicly acknowledged that numerous buildings are on the brink of collapse in the capital, while the construction of new housing is even below the worst years of the Special Period.
