President Donald Trump publicly promoted a potential Republican presidential ticket for 2028 this Monday, featuring Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, calling it a "dream team" and "perfect ticket" during a dinner at the White House Rose Garden for law enforcement leaders from across the country.
According to journalist Eric Daugherty in a video published on X, Trump conducted an informal poll among attendees asking, "Who wants JD Vance?" and "Who wants Marco Rubio?", with Vance receiving the loudest applause and Rubio slightly less.
Immediately afterward, Trump stated, "Sounds like a presidential candidate and vice presidential candidate," suggesting Vance at the top and Rubio as his running mate.
However, the president was quick to clarify his words: "That doesn't mean I support them under any circumstances. But, you know, it's perfect."
The scene is not an isolated event. Since August 2025, when Trump named Vance as his "most likely" successor arguing that "fairly, he is the vice president," the president has deliberately maintained ambiguity about who will lead the MAGA movement in 2028.
That ambiguity intensified in February 2026, when Trump consulted about 25 donors at Mar-a-Lago regarding their preferences between the two, with a response that was "almost unanimous" or "80-20 in favor of Rubio," according to NBC News and The Wall Street Journal.
The numbers tell a more nuanced story. In the straw poll of the CPAC in March 2026, Vance led with 53% compared to Rubio's 35%, with no other candidate exceeding 2%.
A recent YouGov survey reinforces this advantage: 65% of Republicans would consider voting for Vance, compared to 33% for Rubio, and the Vice President is the top choice for 44% as the ideal candidate.
Rubio, on the other hand, dominates among the major donors of the party's financial establishment and has built a high-profile international presence as Secretary of State.
He was a key political architect of Operation Absolute Resolve, which culminated in the capture of Nicolás Maduro on January 3, 2026; he led the negotiations for the Gaza peace plan, signed on October 9, 2025; and he defended the attacks by the United States and Israel on Iranian nuclear facilities that began on February 28, 2026.
On May 6, Rubio replaced spokesperson Karoline Leavitt for almost an hour in the White House press room, causing the hashtag #Rubio2028 to trend on X.
The profiles of both are complementary yet distinct. Vance, with a 77% approval rating among Republicans, is the favorite of the MAGA base and has the support of Donald Trump Jr., Tucker Carlson, and Elon Musk.
Rubio, a Cuban-American born in Miami, is the favorite of the financial establishment and simultaneously holds the positions of Secretary of State and National Security Advisor, a concentration of power without recent precedent.
Everything takes place under the framework of the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, which prevents Trump from running for a third term, making the succession the major political gamble for the MAGA movement looking ahead to 2028.
A former advisor to Ron DeSantis summarized it clearly: "It's JD's race to lose right now. That said, there are a million news cycles between today and a primary, and anything can happen."
