Dairon Urbay Solan, a 40-year-old man and resident of Caibarién, was found dead in a sugarcane field in the rural area of Bartolomé, municipality of Remedios, Villa Clara. Authorities are investigating the incident as a murder committed during a robbery.

According to posts on social media from people close to the case, Dairon left for work as he would on any other day. The last time he was seen alive, he was accompanied by a man who was traveling as a passenger to the Bartolomé area.

Hours later, farmers found his body in a sugarcane field located a few meters from the road between Bartolomé and Zulueta.

Close associates claim that he may have been strangled. The Masonic community of Caibarién, to which Dairon belonged, confirmed that the body showed "signs of strangulation."

The alleged motive for the crime would have been theft. The attackers reportedly stole the electric tricycle he used for work, as well as his cell phone and a gold chain he was carrying.

Concerns among his family began when he did not return home and stopped answering his phone. Initially, they thought it might be due to the frequent power outages and communication issues affecting the area, but as the hours passed, their anxiety ultimately turned into tragedy.

One of the key elements for the investigation is that Dairon's phone was turned on the next day, around six in the morning. From that device, a call was made from Placetas, a municipality located about 40 kilometers from Remedios.

Dairon was a very beloved person in Caibarién. He worked driving an electric tricycle and was practically the breadwinner for two elderly women he lived with. He was also remembered as a teacher of Fine Arts, having graduated from the School of Art Instructors.

Within Freemasonry, he held the degree of Master Mason and served as the Senior Deacon of the Martí Lodge in Caibarién.

Leonardo Rodríguez Alonso, a member of that lodge, expressed the pain of the Masonic community with a message published on social media: “We ask all Masons in Cuba to join us in our plea to the GADU to embrace our brother and MM Dairon Urbay Solan.”

The murder adds to a concerning string of crimes against electric tricycle drivers in Cuba during 2026. In April, Adonis Fuentes González, 35 years old, was murdered in Cienfuegos during a similar robbery attempt targeting his vehicle. On May 10, Ramón Orlando Martínez was stabbed to death in Santiago de Cuba under similar circumstances.

The death of Dairon has sparked numerous expressions of grief and outrage on social media, amidst the growing concern over the rise of violence and insecurity in Cuba.

The Cuban Observatory of Citizen Audit recorded 2,833 verified crimes in 2025, representing a 115% increase compared to 2024 and a 337% rise compared to 2023. Thefts topped the list with 1,536 reported cases, an increase of 479% since 2023.

"How much pain you have left," wrote a friend of Dairon among the dozens of farewell messages that flooded social media after the news broke.
