Nicky Jam spoke for the first time about the controversy between his son Joe Martin and the Dominican communicator Santiago Matías «Alofoke» during an interview on the show MoluscoTV, hosted by Puerto Rican broadcaster Jorge Pabón.
The origin of the conflict was a viral clip in which 20-year-old Joe Martin made critical comments about the reality show "Planeta Alofoke" while broadcasting live.
Alofoke responded harshly to the young man: "The computer you're streaming on was bought by your dad, you didn't earn it yourself. The microphone you're speaking into was bought by your dad, you didn't buy it yourself. In the end, when you go out to a mall, people ask you for a photo because you're the child of Nicky Jam and Arcángel. At your age, I was already a legend; I was making my mark."
That clip reached 1.6 million views on social media and sparked debate in the Latin entertainment world.
Nicky Jam revealed that his son sought his advice before responding, but that Joe took a different path than the one he recommended: “My son has his own world when it comes to his work. He asked me for advice on what to say after what was said to him, and I gave him a lot of suggestions, but he said something completely different.”
Far from being upset, the Puerto Rican singer saw the situation as an opportunity for his son: "Daddy, you broke through because you can't reach the followers that guy has or anything like that. And that guy came and mentioned you. You're just a kid who started from your room with a computer we bought for you and a little camera, and look, you're going viral."
However, Nicky Jam made it clear where his limits as a father are: "If he disrespects him, that’s when I step in and call my buddy. If it’s a disrespect, he is my son and I have to defend my son, and I’ll stick with my son to the death."
Joe Martin is the biological son of Nicky Jam and was raised by Arcángel, who celebrated his 20th birthday with the message "Even though he doesn't have my blood, I love him as if he did," and even tattooed the young man's face.
The singer described his son as someone with charisma and unafraid to speak, expressing pride that he has turned his passion for video games into his own business: "I want him to grow, I want him to do his own thing. That was his idea, something he wanted to do, and he did it."
Nicky Jam also announced that he has a direct conversation pending with the communicator: "I know Alofoke. I'll have my conversation with him when I see him in person and talk to him, normally."
The interview took place in Puerto Rico, where the artist is promoting his concert "The Return Home" at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico, scheduled for this Saturday, May 23, and Sunday, May 24, his first solo show on the island in over 10 years, with both performances nearly sold out.
"We have to let our children make their own mistakes and learn to get out of their troubles on their own, because we won’t always be there beside them," concluded Nicky Jam.
